In this month’s Travel Talk, I’m having a wee chat with the Belgian adventurer Sofie from Wonderful Wandering.
Hello Sofie! We know you’re a travel blogger and adventurer, but maybe you can give us a proper introduction?
Hi there! I’m Sofie from Belgium, where I currently live with my boyfriend. I started blogging at Wonderful Wandering in 2012 and turned it into my full-time job at the beginning of 2015.
When I started, I simply wanted a creative place of my own where I would write what I want and combine that with my passion for travel. I quickly realized there was much more to blogging than just writing posts – and saw that there were many possibilities as well. This lead me to think about what goal I wanted my blog to have and I decided that I want it to be the kind of place that I would like to find when planning my own trips. That means, a place full of practical and hopefully also inspirational travel advice on where to go, what to see, where to eat and what to do. You wont find highly introspective posts on WonderfulWanderings.com as that’s not something I’m looking for when I Google travel tips either. Instead, you’ll find travel articles offering advice based on my own experiences around the world.
Do you have a favourite destination?
I always love going back to London. I don’t know whether that’s because it was my first real trip as a teenager or simply because it’s a city that suits me, but I never get bored of it and am always sad to leave.
While I know it’s an expensive place and definitely not as warm and sunny as I’d like it to be, there’s always something new to discover. There’s food from all over the world, a large creative scene and plenty of dry British humor – exactly the kind that I like.
I’m also a big fan of the musicals performed on the West End and the many street markets.
…And what is your least favourite destination?
Lisbon! And yesterday, for the first time, I heard someone else say that they didn’t like it either. I know lots of people rave about Lisbon. I think if I go back with someone who knows all the hidden gems, I might like it better, but during the short three days that I was there, it didn’t speak to me once. I much preferred Porto which I found to be way less touristy.
What do you always bring with you in your suitcase?
My friend Amanda from MarocMama.com always laughs at me for this but… tea! I don’t function without tea and they don’t always have it at the hotels I stay in. I also like to be able to immediately make a cup of tea when I settle into a rental apartment somewhere.
Aside from that, the usual such as my laptop and clean underwear!
Can you reveal where you are headed next?
I’m actually going to Bruges next, but I’ll already have been there when this interview comes out so my next plans then are Austria (I’m all over the place…), Stockholm and then Provence in France – all in June. I’m very much looking forward to it as I’m spending a bit of time in Belgium right now, but the travel itch is already getting stronger again.
