Travel Highlights of 2016

December marks the end of an amazing year. Here are my travel highlights of 2016.

I’m sending a virtual hug and wishes of a Merry Christmas to all of you wonderful souls out there who have just spent your precious December evening popping by Unsurprisingly, late December marks the very end of 2016. It’s bittersweet, I must admit, to leave behind a year that – despite it’s many difficulties and challenges – also has been one of the best years of my life. There has been so much happiness, so much support, so much love. I’m pretty sure I say this every single year, but OMG can you believe how quickly this year has gone by?! I’m still confused. Where did all the months, all the weeks, all the late nights go?

This has been an incredibly good year. Not only for me personally, but this has also been the year where CavaforLunch has slowly started to spread its wings – both home and on the more international market. Together we have been nominated for 2 Awards in the oh-so-mighty travel blogging field. We have worked with wonderful writers and photographers from all over the world. We have received wonderful invites to press trips (and rejected every single one of them due to firstly #DissertationHell and secondly #FoodPoisoningHell). Moreover, we have connected with so many wonderful people out there, both readers and other bloggers and influencers, both on social media, the blog or via email. I want to send a HUGE thank you to every single one of you. I don’t want to be completely soppy here, but I love you.

With that being said, it’s time for my annual TRAVEL HIGHLIGHTS, and if you would like a walk down memory lane then you can find my Travel Highlights of 2015 here.

Thank you for tagging along this year. I hope you’ll stay around for 2017 – I promise you it will be rather epic!

BudapestCavaHighlights: Starting off the new year in beautiful Budapest with one of my favourite travel buddies – Karoline! Unfortunately, we were both quite sick during our stay, but we still managed to sneak into a spa without any proper swimwear, getting lost in the Hungarian streets, accidentally trying out a Michelin restaurant, and the top it all by being licked on the cheek by a self-declared Tunisian love machine. Holy Shit, what a trip! Read more about Budapest here.

Lowpoint: How can it possibly be a low point when you are on a buddymoon with your best friend?!

bucharestHighlights: In March, we escaped the library and ran off to Bucharest, Romania – simply because the flights were a very good offer from my darling SkyScanner. We faked a hen-do (Sorry not sorry), went pub crawling, and did city walks around Bucharest. I also wrote a city guide to Bucharest which – believe it or not – is the most read article on EVER. Like seriously?! You can read it here.

Lowpoints: We only had 28hrs in Bucharest, I don’t think I have ever been that tired before.

Highlights: April arrived, and I once again felt the urge to run away from the library and all of my rather overwhelming deadlines. Armed with a tiny rental care, Julia, Isabella, Mary and I made our way to the Western coast of Scotland. It’s incredibly beautiful – and incredibly wet. For the nature lovers out there, here’s why you should travel to Oban right now. And here’s the entire tale of our roadtrip.

Lowpoints: Did I mention that it was a heavy rainstorm?!

Highlights: After finishing my final exams, I jetted off to wonderful Paris to catch up with Maggie and Kaity. We visited Versailles, drank wine, and probably ate our own bodyweight in delicious French food. Aaah, bring me back please! Despite being in a serious state of food coma, I also managed to write an article on how to make Versailles your ultimate day trip.

Lowpoint: A severe flooding caused most of the metro stations and museums/galleries to shut down.

Northern Ireland

Northern IrelandNorthern IrelandHighlights: I was fortunate enough to discover both Belfast and the coast near Giant’s Causeway with two of my favorite travel buddies, Clare and Julia. I invited you all on an epic trip around the coast, and I gave up my best Belfast tips in my City Guide.

Lowpoints: Are there really any low points in a place as beautiful as Northern Ireland?

Highlights: In September, I finally had the opportunity to visit Morocco – a country I have been dreaming about exploring for SO LONG! Traveling from Marrakech to Essaouira (and almost everywhere in-between!), I went on my first Desert Glamping Experience, spent my nights dancing around bonfires while being drunk on local wine, I went on both a camel and a jeep safari, and I had a brilliant time exploring the markets of Essaouira.

Lowpoints: I unfortunately had lunch somewhere I probably shouldn’t have, and I ended up with e.coli (!). I have never before been so sick, and it inevitably led to the cancellation of my Central American Tour… Bummer of the year!

Highlights: Exploring beautiful Catalonia with my main squad, Clare and Julia. We demolished several plates of tapas, had way too many glasses of wine and sangria, and topped it all by going on a Cava tasting at the Freixenet winery.

Lowpoints: I was still sick from e.coli, and I spent way too much time on the phone with my awful travel insurance company.

What a busy, yet brilliant year! But how about you? Please share your favorite highlights of 2016, and I’ll pick a lucky lad(y) who will receive a special little Christmas treat in the mail! Merry Christmas xx

Congrats on such a busy, yet wonderful year. Maybe in 2017, you’ll consider a longer trip to Bucharest since you had fun here. :)

    • Christina January 11, 2017

Oh I think a longer stay in Bucharest is definitely something I want to make happen! :) Happy New Year!

  3. Renates Reiser January 8, 2017

Gleder meg til å følge deg videre i 2017 :)

What a truly beautiful year you have had, Lina! And I must say that I am incredibly proud to follow your journey, it sounds like your adventurous soul has finally found an output for all its excitement and recklessness in this blog ;) I can almost hear you squealing with excitement and joy while reading your words.

2016 was a good year for me. I cannot say that anything major happened – except for that trip in June when F and I went to Paris to celebrate our anniversary. F proposed under the Eiffel Tower (and he had even brought champagne!)! I do hope that 2017 will treat you well, Lina! And cheers to a reunion somewhere around the world xx

Kjipt med sykdom, men du har fått til mange fine turer, da <3
