I would never describe us as wine-know-it-alls. However, as a wine tasting in Napa Valley has been on our bucket list forever, we quickly decided to add it to our US road trip. Sun-soaked valley covered with vineyards, small wineries surrounded by lovely American houses, the best White Zinfandel in the world… What else do you need in order to be happy?
First things first: HOW TO CHOOSE A WINERY?
Ok, so the number of wineries in Napa Valley may be a bit overwhelming at first.
It is not surprising though, as it is one of the most famous wine regions in the entire world. One of our biggest problems on this trip appeared to be where we should go for the perfect wine tasting – well, we only had 450 wineries to choose from… This selection process might be easier if you love a particular type of wine (like Moscato or Sauvignon Blanc) – just head for the winery with the best Sauvignon in the region!
We decided to start our experience with one of the most famous wineries – Sutter Home Winery. We could recall their logo from wine shelves all over the world – not only in the US, but also in European countries like Germany, UK, Poland… their bottles are literally everywhere! If you want to know more about other wineries we visited on our West Coast roadtrip you can read more about it here.
OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE SUTTER WINERY
We have been in love with the Sutter Winery’s White Zinfandel since forever. And actually, Sutter Home started the production of this type of wine as the first one in history, however (as always!) there is an element of coincidence behind it.
While preparing a red Zinfandel from the 1975 vintage, part of the grape juice was put aside as it did not ferment properly and contained a lot of sugar. Two weeks later one of the employees tasted the mixture and – kaboom! Delicious pink wine was there! Thanks to this type of wine, Sutter Home became the best-selling wine company in the States and one of the leading brands on the global market.
The Sutter Winery offers a very good wine tasting experience to its visitors. They have a very broad range of wines for tasting, all are standard wines, which you can buy in the corner shop – plus a selected range of posh wines (Reserve). Every sweet-tooth will fall in love with Moscato and Pink Moscato. If you are looking for a light wine that is perfect for a relaxing summer in the city – then you have to taste their Pinot Grigio. And of course it goes without saying – trying the famous White Zinfandel is a must here!
In our opinion, the Sutter Winery is strongly recommended! To be completely honest, we went there twice… The first time we only bought 2 bottles, but after opening them in our hotel room, we immediately knew that we needed to go back for more! The next day we stocked up on wine for the rest of our trip! There is also a small shop onsite with various cute gadgets for all the wine-lovers out there.
FEES & PRICES
We found that a wine tasting of 5 red and 5 white pre-selected wines are free of charge. If you want to taste something more high-end (for example their Reserve wines), you have to pay an additional fee. For example, a high-scored Red Blend (91 points, Tasting Panel) costs 6$ at the Sutter Winery. Excellent value for money, especially compared to other high-end wineries in Napa Valley!
Be warned that a lot of wineries in Napa Valley charge 20-30$ for a wine tasting.
